There's Chinese Tunnels Under Boise!
by Nick Garcia*
TREEFORT 2017
March 22-26
Wednesday through Sunday @ 1 pm and 9 pm
@ Boise Contemporary Theater
854 Fulton St. in Downtown Boise
August 29, 1987. It's late summer and John and Dwayne, two 19-year-old metal-heads, are cooped up in Dwayne's mother's basement in Boise's pre-gentrified North End neighborhood. The Western Idaho Fair has just opened the night prior, and the video game "The Legend of Zelda" has just been released (Dwayne has already collected six fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom). His unrequited high school heartthrob, Lina, is supposed to come by tonight, though she's put him off her entire trip home from cooler-than-Boise Seattle. Can Dwayne get John out of the house before she shows up? Or will John convince Dwayne to come out to Wizzard's with him? And will Lina actually show up? Are there actually Chinese tunnels under Boise? And what the f#&%'s up with that record player?
Join us for a journey not unlike the game of Zelda, where our friends might just enter the underbelly of Boise, and collect a few fragments of wisdom for themselves.
What people are saying:
“...An archeological experience of the soul...Or rather, the soul of an Eighties hesher grappling with life, the loss of a girlfriend, and the wisdom buried in a video game." — Sawing Wood
“...An exploration of memory and perception...teeming with nods to old-school Boise. Ingenious, funny and arrestingly poignant...wrapped in comedy, adventure and innumerable references to The Legend of Zelda and Pink Floyd.” — Boise Weekly
"You guys, if you're in Boise for Treefort GO SEE THIS PLAY! It is brilliant, hysterical, bizarre, and like nothing you've ever seen. I can't remember having laughed so hard. It manages to be funny and deeply moving at the same time. It's full of surprises and insights that can only be understood when you experience it. The Empty Boat Theatre Company has changed my understanding of theater by showing me just how fun and mind-altering seeing a play can be." — Anna Ura, visual artist and super fan
"Boise! You DO NOT want to miss this show!" – Nicole Pierce, naturopathic physician and super fan
"Easily the best event of Treefort 2017. GO SEE THIS." – Ellen Campbell, actress and super fan
"This play was amazing and brings to life the greatest myth in prog rock. If you're in Boise, take two hours out of your Treefort to have your mind totally warped." – Josh Gross, writer and music critic and super fan

The ACHERI
What happened at Sunny Sky Daycare? You are invited to find out firsthand. Something horrific is happening outside the doors of an abandoned daycare in Victor, Idaho. Is it biological, psychological, or something more sinister? Has what's outside found its way inside? Step inside Sunny Sky to find out, but be forewarned that this handmade experience will scare and disturb you.
"...If you don't like having the bejeezus scared out of you, stay away. While many of the scare moments are the sort of sudden shocks that become predictable, they hit far harder in a live setting than on screen. When you add them to the general feeling of dread one experiences being in that room, it's either the best or worst theater experience you're likely to have in Boise for some time." — Boise Weekly

Killadelphia
Lauded as “epic… must see theater” by NY Theatre.com, KILLADELPHIA is the award-winning solo piece created by NYC-based Sean Christopher Lewis that explores violence, penance and second chances in a no-holds-barred look at the urban American Dream. Based on Sean’s time working with inmates at Graterford Prison in Pennsylvania, KILLADELPHIA takes us to the heart of Philadelphia in 2008 when the city faced record murder rates. Using hip-hop and documentary theatre techniques, Sean weaves together the story of murdered teaching fellow Beau Zabel with interviews from Lifers at Graterford Prison—men employed to paint many of the 2,000 murals seen throughout The City of Brotherly Love. Their stories are bolstered by the lyrics, speeches and thoughts of local rap artists, city officials, emergency room technicians, everyday citizens and even conservative radio personalities (all played by Sean) to present a living snapshot of an American urban center in a state of emergency.
Touring since 2008, KILLADELPHIA has garnered national praise and awards, including the National New Play Network’s 2010 Smith Prize for Drama, the Central Ohio Theatre Circle Citation for Best Touring Production, and most recently, the Barrymore Award for Best Collaboration from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia.
